It’s like getting used to a new chair."

Whoops! Major change occurring in your organization? Wondering how it will affect your job? Wondering if your job (chair) will be there? If you’ll still be comfortable? Feeling you don't have choices? You may have more options than you think.

Unless you are being let go, you yourself can make adjustments and make the chair fit. You can look for another position is in your own back yard - your current organization.

You can move UP, DOWN, or swivel AROUND your organization.

Positions may exist for you in other departments and divisions. A LATERAL move (5 MPH is possible on good caster) is good for you because it gives you new experiences and new people to meet.. It’s good for the company, too because they get to keep a valuable resource - YOU and your chair.

Don’t know what other jobs exist? Then move AROUND to research and explore other departments and divisions

Ask friends and co-workers.
Read the newsletter and all organizational publications.
Check the job posting board. Don’t have one?
Talk to personnel or the hiring manager in a department you’d like to work for.

Now here’s an easy one if it works for you - ENRICH the job you have. Make it better - for the company and you. Take on new challenges or new responsibilities. Plate full? Focus on the most important tasks your company needs doing.

Moving DOWN is an option, too. It’s not always negative, particularly if it takes some pressure off or secures you a position with your company.

For any of these choices which could work for you, ask yourself the following questions?

--Am I interested?
--Do opportunities exist in my organization? How can I find out?
--Am I ready to move? How can I get ready?
--Do others perceive me as ready to move?
--What does my organization have to gain from my move?

Some tips:

--Prepare an “internal resume” to market your skills and accomplishments.
--Rev up your contacts and references who can put in a good word for you.
--Prepare a short statement to use with your contacts that summarizes your work
with the organization, your accomplishments, skills, and knowledge.
--Perform your best. Maintain your reputation as a valued worker.

Sometimes it is best to leave. The Goal, however is to “be employable whatever happens.” And Hats Off To You for doing your best for yourself, your company, or any other organization lucky enough to get you!
